Armed Forces Vacation Club is our favorite choice for booking family vacations.
- The Military Vacations for Families from Armed Forces Vacation Club® (AFVC) is a “Space Available” program that offers military and other Department of Defense-affiliated personnel the opportunity to enjoy vacations at popular destinations around the world – for the incredibly low price of just $349* USD per unit, per week.
The price for Space-A reservations is always the same, regardless of location or size of the room/suite/apartment. Our first AFVC Space-A vacation was in 2002. We were living in New Hampshire at the time and we went to Vermont. Several years ago, we decided to use AFVC again and booked a one-week stay in Kissimmee (Orlando). Our accommodations were large enough for all five of us, plus my parents, because we had two bedrooms, another room that was a den with a sofa bed and kitchenette, two bathrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a laundry area! We visited Disney, Universal Studios, Titanic, and more. It was really too much packed into the week, but we had a great time.
Last year, when the BOGO offer hit my inbox, it took us about five minutes to decide we wanted to go back to Orlando! We took advantage of the BOGO offer to book two back-to-back weeks at another Kissimmee (Orlando) resort. We stayed in a 2-bedroom timeshare with two bathrooms, a living room, a full kitchen, a laundry area, and a screened-in back porch. Robert and I stayed in the master bedroom; our two sons stayed in the second bedroom (with twin beds); and our daughter – who flew from college to join us for Christmas break – stayed in the living room on a pullout bed.
For our second trip to Orlando, we decided to enjoy a more leisurely vacation. We bought a 4-day park pass for Disney. And that’s it! We skipped all the other “touristy” things, except for spending a few hours in St. Augustine (on our way to Orlando) and visiting the beach. (But, I don’t consider visiting the beach “touristy”!)
The first week was fabulous. We spent two of our Disney days, picked up our daughter from the airport, and visited with old friends whom we hadn’t seen in over 11 years. They left New Hampshire about a month before we did. Initially, we had only planned to have dinner with our friends on Friday evening, but they ended up having us over on Saturday for a Thanksgiving-style meal. (They own a nail salon and treated September and me to manicures, too!) We went to church with them on Sunday morning, then they insisted on treating us to lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant. (They are both Vietnamese and they knew we’d love it.) It was so wonderful to see them, but they did spoil us way too much. :o)
The second week was less appealing, but not because of the location! I got sick and spent most of the week hanging out in the master bedroom while the family continued to enjoy Disney and went to the beach (without me). I spent the long hours crocheting and watching television, which I really didn’t mind because I like peace and quiet. But, the family did “twist my arm” into visiting Rainforest Café a couple days before we left!
TWO WEEKS in a condo for $349! It was awesome!
If you are planning to take a vacation between August 22nd (earliest start date) and December 21st (latest end date) of this year and you qualify to be a member of AFVC (It’s FREE!), you need to hop on over there RIGHT NOW and take at look at this BOGO sale.
- The program is available to all active and retired members of the Armed Forces, Department of Defense employees and select civilian employees in military support roles.
- More about program requirements can be found in our Frequently Asked Questions section.
If you could take a Space-A vacation, where would you go? The BOGO sale is on until August 20th, so you have plenty of time to think about your dream vacation. We are not planning a major vacation this year. But, next year (assuming the BOGO sale is offered again), we are considering a week in Orlando with a second week in Charleston. We visited Charleston for a few days many years ago and I have always wanted to go back!
