Disclosure: I participated in an Influencer Activation Program on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for BGCA. I received a promotional item to thank me for participating.
Do you have any children who engage in online activities? I have three: ages 19, 15, and 10. While my oldest is very Internet savvy, I am still teaching the younger two to be hyper-vigilant when they use the Internet. I teach them not to share ANY personal information (such as full name, address, phone number, etc.) and not to assume that the “10-year-old girl” is really who she says “she” is. I’ve talked to them some about “catfishing” (when scammers make up online identities and social circles in order to trick people into romantic relationships) and other Internet safety issues.
The Boys & Girls Club of America is committed to Cyber Safe Futures in support of Internet Safety Awareness. In partnership with Sprint, they have dedicated the month of June to helping parents and their kids remain CyberSmart. Each week in June, their CyberTribe has been posting tips and answering user-generated questions from parents just like you. It is close to the end of June, but it is not too late to participate!
At BGCA’s Cyber Safe Site, you can learn about Cyber Safety using numerous resources, including quizzes, the CyberTribe Q&A, cyber safety resources, and more. For example, the resources section covers the following topics:
Cyberbullying – Respecting Yourself and Others Online
Social Networks – Connecting Through Technology
Mobile Technologies – Using a Cell Phone? Know the Rules.
Online Privacy – Setting Limits on Sharing
I encourage you to visit the Cyber Safe Site where you can submit questions to the CyberTribe. While you are there, please enter the giveaway! Everyone who submits a question is entered for a chance to win an iPad Mini. The winner’s Boys & Girls Club of choice will also receive $500. I don’t know about your community, but the Club in my community could really use $500!
Here’s what you need to do when you visit the BGCA CyberSafe site:
- Visit the Ask the CyberTribe tab
- Click Ask now
- Write in your question and fill out your information (First Name, Last Initial, City, and State)

Here is a sample questions from the quiz:
How often do you have conversations with your child on important cyber safety topics – privacy settings, information-sharing, sexual predators, sexting and other potentially harmful activity?
Here is another:
Have you ever Googled your child’s name?
Hmmm! Maybe this isn’t as clear cut as you thought?! Don’t wait! Go take the quiz now and find out how CyberSafe your family is!
