Saturday, September 27, 2014 is the Smithsonian Free Museum Day.
In the spirit of Smithsonian Museums, who offer free admission everyday, Museum Day Live! is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian magazine in which participating museums across the country open their doors to anyone presenting a Museum Day Live! ticket… for free.
Go to Museum Day Venues to see which museums are participating, then PRINT OUT passes. You can search for participating museums by State, Zip Code, and/or Keyword.
You can get FREE ADMISSION for 2 people by going to Museum Day Ticket. Enter your information, choose a participating museum, and the tickets will be emailed to you. You can order more than one set.
PLEASE NOTE: If a participating museum is normally closed on Saturday, you may use your tickets on Sunday, September 28th!
Here is a SMALL sampling of participating museums:
Iron and Steel Museum of Alabama – Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, 12632 Confederate parkway, McCalla, AL, 35111
U.S. Space and Rocket Center – One Tranquility Base, Huntsville, AL, 35805
American Textile History Museum – 491 Dutton Street, Lowell, MA, 1854
Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History – Regis College, 241 Wellesley St., Weston, MA, 2493
North Carolina Music Hall of Fame – 109 West A Street, Kannapolis, NC, 28081
Cleveland Botanical Garden – 11030 East Blvd., Cleveland, OH, 44106
Taft Museum of Art – 316 Pike Steet, Cincinnati, OH, 45202
Pink Palace Museum – 3050 Central Ave, Memphis, TN, 38111
Memphis Brooks Museum of Art – 1934 Poplar Avenue, Overton Park, Memphis, TN, 38104
Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest – 1542 Bateman Bridge Rd., Forest, VA, 24551
Old City Cemetery Museums and Arboretum – 401 Taylor Street, Lynchburg, VA, 24501
*NOTE: The two Virginia locations listed above can be visited on the same day. Our church youth group recently visited both places (and a third location) in the same day, but, for a more leisurely day, I recommend only two. Plus, the third one isn’t listed anyway. 🙂 Jefferson’s home at Poplar Forest is a fascinating bit of architecture! The Old City Cemetery has several interesting small museums and plenty of regional history!
Tate Geological Museum – 125 College Dr., Casper, WY, 82601
The museums listed above are by no means an exhaustive list! There are many more from which to choose, so be sure to check out the map and find something great to do on Saturday!
